about

A special single by VibraSÓN featuring music originally written by our band leader's father decades ago, arranged for Mambo by Jake Jacobs and Dan Neville, featuring special guest percussionist Karl Perazzo!

De Vez en Cuando started as an incomplete hand-written music chart found in the family files of leader Jake Jacobs, originally composed as a Beguine by Jake’s dad Marvin Jacobs, with just a title (“Every Now and Then”), chords, and a melody. Enter musician Dan Neville (vibraphone, marimba), who arranged it along with Jake Jacobs for Mambo, leading to classic Salsa. Jake takes a bongo solo in the song, and the lyrics were written and performed by Luis Morales from a seed coro “De vez en cuando, te miro y sonrío” by Jake, telling a love story implied. The song was co-produced by Jake Jacobs and Santana Band percussionist Karl Perazzo, who performs the timbale track along with hand percussion. Dan Neville plays vibes, and added a wonderful track played on a traditional Colombian marimba de Chonta. Band veterans Marco Diaz and Saul Sierra play piano, bass respectively. Julio Perez performs congas, and Jake Jacobs is featured with a bongo solo. Bay area stars Christelle Durandy, Armando Cordoba, and Braulio Barrera sing coros, along with a track by vocalist Xiomara Torres from Guapi, Colombia. She is recording a solo CD with Dan Neville in Cali, where they are currently in residence. The song's arrangement, energy, and vibe lines are sure to please dancers and music fans both.

VibraSÓN's music respects and honors the old -classic salsa from the Boogaloo era of the 1960s- while adding a contemporary feel to the sound, with dancers in mind. The vibraphone-centric format echoes the sounds of an era of Latin Music where big bands gave way to smaller and hipper club-sized ensembles. The smoothness of the vibraphone embraces the intimacy of a compact group that connects with its surroundings in clubs with dancers practically on top of the stage. Swing is king in these settings, and VibraSÓN glorifies the tightness of a band made up of percussion instruments, adding the vocal character of modern songs.

Like all musical bands, VibraSON was isolated and unable to play any live shows during the pandemic of 2020. But in this technological age, they remained closely in touch and able to collaborate to produce several releases, including Live recordings from their previous Latin Vibe Tuesdays events and remixes of 3 songs from their debut CD. Our hearts go out to all people affected by the pandemic…
